Disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious problems. Some waste will eventually rot, but not all, and in the process it may smell or generate methane gas, which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect. Leachate produced as waste decomposes may cause pollution. There are many wastes that should not be buried in a landfill site and these are often referred to as problem wastes. Many of these wastes, like toxic chemicals and oils, have the potential to contaminate ground water whilst others may give off toxic fumes and odours.
It is important that you contact your local council to see if the particular waste you have is acceptable for landfill. They may also be able to assist in finding an alternate use for your waste or even a recycling option. You can find the link to your council here.
